Your Innkeeper, Stephanie Schmid

While you are relaxing on the window seat of an upstairs room, taking in the majestic views of Grand Mesa, Stephanie is likely to be in the kitchen below, slicing locally grown, in-season fruits and vegetables. Or she might be found strolling among the peach trees with her yellow Lab, Cameo. She might be poring over business records in her private wing of the house, or relaxing on the porch chatting with a guest.

Stephanie and her husband, Bill, opened The Orchard House on East Orchard Mesa in 1987. The Schmids owned a rafting company and operated an equestrian facility in the Roaring Fork Valley before leaving Aspen for the Grand Valley's warmer climate. They soon decided their new home was much too much house for them; given their enjoyment of cooking and entertaining, they hung out the B & B shingle. Bill died in the spring of 1998, but his meticulous influence lives on in Stephanie's work. She's an accountant, community activist — as adept with a wooden spoon as she is with a computer. She'll cater to your needs or make herself scarce, always serving her guests healthy and nutritious gourmet food and a smattering of dry wit, along with the best of wines.
